Custom Skateboard Deck: Printed, Hand-Painted or Vinyl? What Each Costs and How Long It Lasts

There are three ways to get your own graphic onto a skateboard deck: a print transferred onto the wood, an artist painting it, or a printed vinyl sticker laid over a blank deck. They don't cost the same, they don't wear the same when you skate them, and if the deck is only ever going to hang on a wall, the cheapest of the three is a perfectly good choice. Below: what each one actually is, what it costs at real shops (with the date we checked), what happens to it under a pair of trucks, and which one to pick.

We sell the first kind, so read the rest knowing that. We've kept the comparison to things you can verify on the sellers' own pages, and the links are at the end.

Printed: a transfer onto the wood

The design is printed with UV inks onto a transfer film, the film is applied cold to the underside of the deck with a squeegee, and then it's peeled away: what stays on the maple is the ink layer and nothing else. It isn't printed directly onto the wood, and nobody in the industry does it that way for a single deck; the transfer is what makes a one-off possible, because there's nothing to set up per design. A photo, gradients, small text: all of it reproduces.

What it costs at shops that do it for one deck at a time, checked on the dates in the table at the end: CustomDecks.eu (Netherlands) at 79.95 €, with griptape 7.50 € extra and 7–10 working days; Eina Skateboard Co. (Lleida, Spain) at 89.95 €; and ours at 89 € with shipping in Spain included. One listing looks like the same product for much less: Positivos, at 49.97 €. Read its page before comparing it: it says the deck loses its warranty after the first use and that it comes without trucks, wheels or griptape. That's a printed deck sold as decoration, and it's honest about it.

Skated, a printed graphic wears where the deck touches the world: the tail, the edges, and the lip of the concave where it scrapes ledges and rails. It's the same thing that happens to a stock deck from any brand, because it's the same face of the board. We don't publish a number of months for it, because it depends entirely on how and how much you skate. A deck that hangs on a wall, or gets ridden now and then, keeps its colour for a very long time.

Hand-painted: a one-off, priced by the hour

An artist paints the deck. What you get is an interpretation of your idea, not a reproduction of your file, and that's the point: no two are alike. The price is the deck plus the artist's time. BeXtreme (Barcelona) sells the blank deck at 39 € and offers painting by its own artist, with no price published on the page; on Etsy, a hand-painted deck shipped from Spain was listed at 250 €. Lead time depends on one person's calendar, so count in weeks and don't order it for a date that's close.

How it wears comes down to the clear coat. Paint on maple under a good varnish lasts as long as you like on a wall. Skated, the tail and the edges go through varnish and paint alike, but unlike a print, paint can be touched up by the same hand that put it there. If you want a piece of art rather than a copy of your photo, this is the one.

Vinyl: a big sticker over a blank deck

The design is printed on adhesive vinyl, cut to the deck's outline and stuck on. It's the cheapest way to get a colour photo onto a deck, and it's what a lot of the low listed prices on marketplaces actually are. BeXtreme's blank deck is 39 € and its vinyl design 19 € (marked down from 25 €), so 58 € for the pair. The best-selling custom deck listing we found on Etsy (IDYD, United Kingdom) shows 36.92 €, and that's the vinyl alone; the printed deck from the same seller is 97.49 €.

On a wall, vinyl is fine if it's applied well: up close you'll see the edge of the sheet and a slight sheen, and that's all. Skated, the edge of the sheet is precisely where rails and coping catch, and a slide can lift or peel it. It's a sticker, and it behaves like one. If the deck is going on a wall and the budget is tight, vinyl is a legitimate choice and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Which one, then

  • A colour photo on a deck you'll skate: a transfer print. It wears like a normal graphic instead of peeling like a sticker.
  • A colour photo on a deck for the wall, cheapest possible: vinyl, or a printed deck sold as decoration.
  • A piece of art, one of a kind, no hurry: hand-painted.
  • A run of identical decks with a two- or three-colour logo: ask about screen printing, which is what the skate brands use and only pays off in a series.

What to check before ordering

  • Which technique it is. If the listing only says "custom" or "personalised", ask: vinyl, print or paint. The price usually gives it away.
  • Whether it's a real deck. The standard for skating is 7-ply maple. Some decorative "skateboards" are shaped panels that won't take trucks.
  • What the price includes. Griptape, shipping and the design work are all charged separately more often than not.
  • Whether you see the design on the deck before paying. If not, expect at least one round of emails, and check the file specifications first.
  • Where it ships from. From outside the EU, add import VAT, possibly customs duty, and the carrier's handling fee at the door.
  • That there's no changing your mind. A made-to-order deck is excluded from the 14-day right of withdrawal everywhere in the EU. What you keep is the right to complain if it arrives damaged or the print isn't what you sent.

How we do it

The deck you design here is a 7-ply maple deck in 8", 8.25" or 8.5", with your design applied by UV transfer. It's 89 € with shipping inside Spain included, and from 15 € more per order to the rest of the European Union, depending on the country. Griptape is not in the price: it's 9.95 € per deck if you want it, and it arrives fitted. The complete kit, assembled and the wall mount aren't on sale yet. One order is one design and one size. In Spain the deck leaves the workshop within 72 hours and arrives 3–5 working days after that; outside Spain we don't publish a delivery estimate yet. The full breakdown is in what a custom deck costs, and how the print is made in how a custom deck is made.

Frequently asked questions

Is a vinyl skateboard deck good for skating?

For a wall, yes. For skating, not really: the design is a printed adhesive sheet, and the edge of that sheet is exactly where rails and coping catch, so a slide can lift or peel it. A transfer print leaves only ink on the wood and wears like a normal deck graphic instead.

How long does a printed skateboard graphic last?

There is no honest number, because it depends on how and how much you skate. The graphic is on the face that scrapes ledges and rails, so it wears first at the tail, the edges and the lip of the concave, exactly like a stock deck from any brand. On a wall, or ridden now and then, it keeps its colour for a very long time.

Is a hand-painted skateboard deck worth it?

If you want a one-of-a-kind piece of art rather than a copy of your photo, yes. You pay for the artist's hours on top of the deck, one Etsy listing from Spain was at 250 €, and you wait for one person's calendar. Skated, paint and varnish wear through like any graphic, but paint can be touched up.

What is the cheapest way to get a custom skateboard deck?

Vinyl over a blank deck: about 58 € at BeXtreme (39 € deck plus 19 € vinyl design), or a printed deck sold as decoration, like Positivos at 49.97 €, whose own listing says the warranty ends with the first use. Both are fine for a wall. For a deck you will skate, a transfer print is 79.95–89.95 € at the shops we checked.

Is a custom skateboard deck printed directly onto the wood?

No. For a single deck the design is printed with UV inks onto a transfer film, applied cold to the underside and then the film is peeled off, leaving only the ink. That is what makes a one-off possible: nothing has to be set up per design.

Can I return a custom skateboard deck if I don't like it?

No, at any seller in the EU: a made-to-order product is excluded from the 14-day right of withdrawal. What you keep is the right to complain if it arrives damaged, if the print is not what you sent or if the size is wrong. Seeing the design on the deck before paying is what stands in for the return you will not have.
