What Size Custom Skateboard Deck Should You Choose?

Deck "size" means one number: the width, measured across the middle. Length and wheelbase follow from it automatically once a deck is shaped, so they're not something you actually choose — width is the only decision.

The three measurements, and which one matters

A deck has a width, a length and a wheelbase (the distance between the two sets of truck holes). Only the width is quoted as "the size" — 8.0", 8.25" and so on — because it's the one that changes how the deck feels to stand on. Length and wheelbase scale up and down with it, so they take care of themselves.

Comparing the common widths

Most street decks sit between about 7.5" and 8.5" wide. The difference between those two is one inch — 2.5 cm — which sounds small until you're standing on it. A narrower deck is lighter and easier to flick around; a wider one feels more planted and stable underfoot.

We make three widths:

8.0" (20.3 cm) — the most common street width, and the safe default if you're not sure. Comfortable for most adult shoe sizes.
8.25" (21 cm) — a little more room for your feet without feeling heavy; a good middle ground for bigger feet or for mixing street and park.
8.5" (21.6 cm) — more stable at speed and easier to land on in a transition, which is why it's common at parks and bowls.

We don't make 7.5" or narrower decks. If the board is for a young child who's actually going to ride it, a narrower deck will fit their feet better; if it's a gift for the wall, the width won't matter.

Does the size matter if it's a gift or wall art?

Less than you'd think. If nobody's actually going to ride it, 8.0" is the right call by default — it's the shape people picture when they think of a skateboard. The width only really matters once someone's foot is on it.

If you're still not sure

Go with 8.0". It's the most common width for street skating and suits most shoe sizes, so it's the pick least likely to feel wrong — and every size costs the same here, so there's no downside to changing your mind before you order.
